The title for this exhibition, "Asirvatham," translates to "blessings" in English. It signifies the mutual blessings within families caring for loved ones with autism. The caregivers who selflessly nurture, and the children who enrich their families' lives. These children remind society of the profound importance of humanity and the need for inclusive support. Asirvatham calls upon society to extend its blessings, embracing and celebrating individuals with autism or any disabilities to create a truly inclusive community for all.

Exhibition Aim

This exhibition aims to highlight caregivers' profound struggles and unwavering dedication to loved ones with autism. Through powerful portraits of ten caregivers – 5 mothers, 3 fathers, 1 grandmother, and 1 sister - the exhibition hopes to raise awareness within the community and society. It reveals their emotional journeys and advocates for the well-being of caregivers and their families.

Caregivers

The caregivers, hailing from diverse backgrounds, have united with a shared purpose: to advocate for the well-being of those caring for children with autism.

Through this exhibition, they aim to illuminate their struggles, triumphs, and deep hopes amidst the emotional challenges of their loved one's condition and uncertain future. They stand in solidarity with all caregivers, including those unable to participate due to fear of negative publicity, criticism, or personal limitations.

Believing that change begins within, these caregivers have taken the lead, hoping to inspire others to join in advocating and supporting caregivers of children with autism and other disabilities.

Artists

Our artists, hailing from diverse backgrounds both local and international, are united by their commitment to using their artistic talents to capture the triumphs, emotions, and challenges of caregivers.

Through their work, they convey powerful messages of empathy and inclusiveness, essential for the well-being of caregivers and children with autism.

Each piece is a heartfelt tribute to the struggles, successes, and hopes of caregivers, advocating for a society that embraces and supports everyone as we move forward together.

CAREGIVER EXHIBITION ON 29 JUNE 2024

Ladies and Gentlemen,

1. Thank you for joining us today at the caregiver exhibition, themed "Asirvatham <pronounced as aa-seer-waa-tham>: Unveiling inspiring caregivers’ stories." This exhibition is more than just a display of paintings - it reflects the different journeys that caregivers of individuals with autism have embarked upon.

2. The artwork exhibited today portrays the daily challenges, emotions, and aspirations that caregivers of individuals with autism navigate in their relationships with their family members. Through these artistic expressions, we gain deeper insights into the resilience and dedication that define their everyday lives.

3. Beyond the visual experience, this exhibition engages us to have conversations about the very nature of caregiving of individuals with autism. It challenges us to re-examine our definitions and expand our perspectives. We are also invited to adopt a more empathetic view towards caregivers.

I was moved by Mr Rajendran’s story when he related to me his experiences as a caregiver to his son for over 24 years. Mr Rajendran also shared about the importance of Hindu rituals and the pains he felt in realising his son may not be able to fulfil the traditional last rites. This poignant aspect of his experience is vividly portrayed in his artwork.

4. I hope that through this exhibition, we can encourage the wider community to expand our perspectives. As we ponder over the stories depicted in these paintings, let us consider putting ourselves in the shoes of these caregivers. And reflect how we can contribute to building a more inclusive society - where caregivers are supported and valued, and where individuals with autism can thrive.

5. All of us can play a part in nurturing and building lives together, to make Singapore a more caring and inclusive home for all. Every act of care matters and no act is too small. These acts of care make a big difference in our society and uplift those around us. We can put our values into action by showing everyday acts of kindness and volunteering to let our caregivers feel supported. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, and probably even more so, for caregivers whose children are autistic.

6. Thank you for being part of this important dialogue today. Let us continue to embrace empathy and understanding, as we work together towards a more inclusive future.

I was first approached by Rajendran, in February to paint portraits of caregivers, taking care of loved ones with autism for an exhibition aimed at raising awareness about the challenges they face through art. This fully self-funded project required the completion of 10 paintings within two months. The immediate task was to find more artists who supported the cause to help complete the artwork within the timeframe. We were fortunate to assemble 10 volunteer artists through friends, with a special mention to Raymond Yap, a resident art lecturer who engaged his students.

The initial meeting between caregivers and artists was a heartfelt session where caregivers courageously shared their journeys. Their willingness to open up about their experiences to seeming strangers was remarkable. There were many emotional moments, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, many of whom were shy and reserved, and some of whom were caregivers themselves. Most of the caregivers were new to art, and the idea of having their portrait painted was a novel experience for them.

The unveiling of the completed art pieces two months later was filled with joyful anticipation. Each volunteer artist brought a unique touch to their interpretation of what they heard, observed, and most importantly, felt from their hearts, resulting in art that went beyond mere paint on canvas.

For me, what began as a project to align all parties and meet deadlines evolved into a profound experience where I witnessed open expressions of fear, courage, hope, and love. It became a community effort where people came together, willing to listen and participate in a social awareness project. I am honored to be part of this journey.

I have often pondered how art can make a positive social impact. This project revealed that beyond the aesthetic appeal or technical perfection of a brushstroke, it is the interaction and connection of different groups of people telling a story to the community and touching hearts.

A Story of Transformation:

Raising Heeren and Embracing Life's Challenges

“Heeren was diagnosed with autism at 3 years old. His condition prompted me to resign from my job and become a full-time caregiver for him. The initial years were hard for me. I struggled with my disappointment and denial over his condition. Eventually, the circumstances took a toll on my marriage, and I had to raise him as a single parent.

Heeren’s admission to a Sped school has profoundly influenced me. It dawned on me that I am not alone in this struggle. Instead, it gave rise to a sense of acceptance within me. Rather than feeling sorry for myself, I decided to dedicate my life to helping Heeren live his life to the fullest. Now at the age of 25, I am proud to announce that my son is undergoing job training at a vocational centre independently.

Being a caregiver for Heeren has entirely transformed my life. It gives me the courage to go beyond my comfort zone. Heeren is fond of working in Mediacorp. To fulfill his dream, I seized an opportunity to participate in a cooking variety show on Vasantham so that he could realize his dream. Through him, I see a life beyond myself, where his success represents mine too.”

“ஹீரனுக்கு ஆட்டிசம் இருப்பதை அவனுக்கு மூன்று வயதானபோது அறிந்துகொண்டேன். அவனது நிலையை அறிந்த நான் உடனே என் வேலையை நிறுத்திவிட்டு முழுநேரமாக அவனது பராமரிப்பில் கவனம் செலுத்தினேன். ஆரம்ப காலம் எனக்கு மிகவும் சவால்மிக்கதாக அமைந்தது. அவனுக்கு ஆட்டிசம் என்பதை என் மனம் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மறுத்தது. சந்தர்ப்பச் சூழல்களால் என் திருமண வாழ்வும் பாதிப்படைந்தது. அவனை ஒற்றைப் பெற்றோராக வளர்க்கவேண்டிய நிலைமை உண்டானது. ஹீரணை ஒரு சிறப்புப் பள்ளியில் சேர்த்தபோது அங்கு என்னைப்போன்ற பெற்றோர்கள் பலரைச் சந்திக்க வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. நான் மட்டும் இத்தகைய நிலையில் இல்லை, என்னைப் போலச் சிரமப்படுவோர் பலர் உள்ளனர் என்பதை அறிந்தேன். என் வாழ்நாளை ஹீரனுக்காக அர்ப்பணித்தேன். தற்போது ஹீரன் வேலைக்குத் தயாராகும் பயிற்சியில் முழுநேரமாக ஈடுபட்டுள்ளான். அவனை முழுநேரமாகக் கவனித்துக்கொள்வது என்னையும் ஒரு புதிய மனிதராக உருவாக்கியுள்ளது. எப்போதும் எனது சௌகரிய வட்டத்துக்குள்ளேயே இருக்காமல் நானும் பல புதிய அனுபவங்களை நாடினேன். அவனது வெற்றி எனது வெற்றிக்கும் அடித்தளமானது.”

Lekha embodies an unshakable, steady, tender, and empathetic presence, described as "soft strength." This presence provides comfort and is her son's gift to her. The artist's use of silhouette and the extended arm in the artwork highlights the numerous organizations and people who have supported her, including AWWA, family, friends, schools, and even religious communities. This artistic choice emphasizes the collective support network that has been crucial in her journey. The portrayal underscores the importance of community and the profound impact of compassionate support systems in nurturing resilience and strength.

I have been deeply involved in charitable work through the Lions Club Sentosa, which I founded in 1986. This ground-up project using art to portray caregivers of adult autistic children is particularly meaningful to me. It combines my passion for charity with the power of art to raise awareness and support for these caregivers. I am glad to contribute to such a worthwhile cause, helping to highlight their challenges and resilience. Navigating Public Spaces:

Advocating for Understanding for Autism Caregivers

“Family outings with my son have always been daunting. Although we prepare him in advance, it is difficult to anticipate what may lead to his meltdown.

I remember my son feeling distressed at the fast-food restaurant when his favorite seat was occupied. Despite sharing my predicament, the occupants refused to relocate their seating arrangement.

The incident left me feeling angry and disappointed. A simple act of kindness by members of the public would have eased my caregiving burden greatly. My encounter underscores the importance of public awareness towards caregivers of children with autism. I wish that people could become more compassionate and contribute to an inclusive society.”

“குடும்பத்துடன் வெளியில் சாப்பிடச் செல்வது எல்லோருக்கும் மகிழ்ச்சியைத் தரக்கூடிய ஒன்று. ஆனால் ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் அப்படி வெளியே செல்லும்போது நாங்கள் பல வகைகளில் அதற்குத் தயார்படுத்திக்கொள்வோம். என்னவெல்லாம் நாங்கள் நினைத்ததுபோல் இல்லாமல் இருக்குமோ அதையெல்லாம் முன்கூட்டியே யூகித்து அதற்காக எங்கள் மகனைத் தயார்செய்வோம். ஆனாலும் எங்களையும்மீறி ஏதாவது ஒரு சிக்கலைச் சமாளிக்கவேண்டிய சூழல் ஏற்படும். ஒருமுறை ஒரு விரைவு உணவகத்திற்குச் சென்றபோது அங்கு என் மகன் வழக்கமாக உட்காரும் இருக்கை காலியாக இல்லாததைக் கண்டு அவன் மிகவும் சிரமப்பட்டான். கோபம், அழுகை, போராட்டம் என அவன் நடத்தையில் அதிக மாற்றம் ஏற்பட்டது. அவனது நிலையையும் எங்களது சிரமத்தையும் எடுத்துக்கூறியும் அங்கிருந்தவர்கள் அந்த இருக்கையிலிருந்து வேறொர் இருக்கைக்கு நகர்ந்து அவ்விடத்தை எங்களுக்கு விட்டுக்கொடுக்க மறுத்தனர். இது எனக்கு மிகுந்த மனக்கவலையைக் கொடுத்தது. நாங்கள் படும் சிரமத்தைக் கண்கூடாகப் பார்த்தும்கூட அவர்கள் மனம் இலகவில்லை. இதற்கு ஆட்டிசம் பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வு இல்லாதது மட்டுமே காரணமாகும். இம்மாதிரியான பிள்ளைகளின் பெற்றோர்கள் அனுபவிக்கும் சிரமத்தை அவர்கள் அறியமாட்டார்கள். இம்மாதிரியான பெற்றோர்கள் வாழ்நாள் முழுதும் அனுபவிக்கும் பல சிக்கல்களுள் இதுவும் ஒன்றுதான். ஆனால் இதுபோன்ற ஒன்றில் மற்றவரது கனிவு கைகொடுத்திருந்தால் நம் பிள்ளைகளின் எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றிய ஒரு பயம் கொஞ்சம் குறைந்திருக்கும் என்றே எண்ணுகிறேன். அனைவரையும் உள்ளடக்கும் ஒரு சமூதாயத்தை உருவாக்குவோம்!”

Every moment spent working towards the project's goals was filled with warmth and meaning, leaving a lasting impression on me. It's moments like these that remind us of the beauty of coming together to make a difference in the lives of others.

From Grief to Acceptance:

Our Journey with Autism and the Birth of Anbudan Autism

“Five years ago, my eldest daughter is diagnosed with autism. Knowledge of her condition has brought me grief. My dreams for my daughter ended prematurely. Our family underwent a long period of grieving. It was only years later that we reached a point acceptance over her condition. In the past, we struggled with my daughter’s sensory issues and were unable to comprehend her meltdowns over social events.

Part of our social lives were affected. We had to forgo attending social events such as weddings and get-togethers. However, with subsequent encounters, we started to develop a greater appreciation and make adjustments to her needs. Thankfully with the support from my relatives and friends, we managed to have her attending several smaller social events. Despite her improvements, there remain many social challenges for her to conquer. My family and I strive to support her as much as possible. My journey has made me realise the current gaps in our society. I hope that with greater awareness and understanding, we can create an inclusive society for our children to live in.

After the 2020 Circuit Breaker, I made "Anbudan Autism" to share my experiences and address the lack of autism awareness in the Tamil community. By providing resources in both Tamil and English, I aim to foster understanding and inclusivity for children with diverse needs.”

“ஒரு குழந்தை கருவில் தோன்றியதுமே அக்குழந்தையைப் பற்றிய பல கனவுகளைப் பெற்றோர்களாகிய நாம் வளர்த்துக்கொள்கிறோம். எந்த அளவுக்கு அடுக்கடுக்காய் கனவுகளை வளர்த்துள்ளோம் என்பதை ஓர் ஒற்றை வார்த்தை உணர்த்தியது. ஐந்து வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு என் மூத்த மகளுக்கு ஆட்டிசம் என்று கண்டறியப்பட்டபோது மலைபோல வளர்ந்திருந்த அந்தக் கனவுகள் அப்படியே, ஒரே வினாடியில் சரியக் கண்டேன். கனவுகள்! உருவமே இல்லாத ஒன்று சுக்குநூறாகும்போது அது ஏற்படுத்தும் வலி!... அதை வார்த்தைகளால் விவரிக்க இயலாது. எவரும் அறியாத ஒரு புதிய உலகம் எங்கள் முன்னால் தோன்றியது. அவள் நிலையை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள சில வருடங்கள் ஆகின. பல நேரங்களில் பல குடும்ப சமூக நிகழ்வுகளில்கூட எங்களால் பங்குகொள்ள முடியவில்லை. சத்தம், ஒலி, ஒளி, கூட்டம் எல்லாம் எங்களுக்கு ஒரு மாற்று அனுபவமாக இருந்தது. அவளுடைய வலி எங்களது வலியாகவும் மாறியது. ஏன்? ஏன்? எனப் பல கேள்விகள், என்னுள் தோன்றின. அவற்றிற்கு விடை தேடி அலைந்தேன். அப்போது தமிழில் இது தொடர்பான தகவல்களைத் தேடிப் பெறச் சிரமப்பட்டேன். தமிழ்ச் சமூகங்களில் ஆட்டிசம் பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வு குறைவாக இருப்பதையும் உணர்ந்தேன், அதைப்பற்றி வெளிப்படையாகப் பேச முன்வந்தேன். ‘அன்புடன் ஆட்டிசம்’ என்னும் சமூக வலைத்தளத்தை உருவாக்கினேன். அதன்மூலம் ஆட்டிசம் தொடர்பான தகவல்களை ஆங்கிலத்திலும் தமிழிலும் பரப்பினேன். ஆட்டிசம்கொண்ட குழந்தைகளைச் சமூகத்தில் உள்ளடக்குவதே எனது தலையாய நோக்கமாகக்கொண்டு என் பயணம் தொடர்ந்தது; என் குழந்தைக்கான ஒரு புதிய உலகத்தைத் தேடி...”

Being passionate about raising awareness for mental health, particularly chronic conditions, I found myself drawn to a group advocating for autism awareness through capturing caregivers' stories. It's a journey fueled by a shared commitment to raising awareness, fostering understanding, and providing support for those affected by autism and their caregivers.

Seeking Empathy:

Understanding the Challenges Faced by Children with Autism

"My greatest struggle has to do with how the public perceives my son. Due to his autism, he faces difficulties dealing with his spatial awareness and balance. On his way to school, he struggles to navigate himself in the crowded bus. In his attempt to reach his favorite seat, he would bump into people who are in his way. His behavior attracts disgusted looks from members of the public. If not for me, I believe people would reprimand him on the spot.

Sometimes, instead of jumping to conclusions, I just wish that people could empathize with our children with autism. That our children are struggling with autism, and it is equally hard on us as parents too."

“My son's intense passion for dinosaurs has led to numerous difficult moments. To ease his distress, I've purchased multiple sets of identical dinosaur T-shirts for him to wear daily. As I navigate parenthood, I've realized I'm constantly evolving alongside my child, encountering various teachable moments that deeply impact me.

Despite the challenges, I remain resolute in supporting my son's aspirations. Our bond, nourished by love and sincere care, propels us forward. While the future is uncertain, I embrace the philosophy of continual growth—learning, relearning, and unlearning—as a testament to my unwavering commitment to my child.”

“ஆட்டிசம் உள்ள குழந்தைகளுக்கு ஏதாவது ஒன்றில் அதீத ஆர்வம் இருக்கும். என் மகனுக்கு டைனசோர்கள்மீது அதீத ஆர்வம் உண்டு. அவனது இந்த அதீத ஆர்வம் சில நேரங்களில் சாதகமாகக் கைகொடுத்தாலும் பல நேரங்களில் சிக்கல்களையும் உண்டாக்கியுள்ளது. அவனைச் சமாளிக்க பல டைனசோர் டி- சட்டைகளை வாங்கிச் சேர்த்தேன். இதுபோன்று பற்பல அனுபவங்கள். இந்தப் பயணத்தில் நானும் ஒரு சிறப்புத் தேவையுடைய பிள்ளையின் பெற்றோராகப் பரிணாம வளர்ச்சியை அடைந்தேன். எவ்விதச் சவாலாக இருந்தாலும் என் மகனது ஆசைகளையும் விருப்பங்களையும் பூர்த்திச் செய்வதில் நான் முனைப்புடன் இருந்தேன். அன்பு நிறைந்த எங்களது பந்தம் எங்களை முன்னால் நகர்த்திச் சென்றது. ஆட்டிசம் உள்ள குழந்தைகள் ஒன்றைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டால் அந்தத் திறனைப் பெற்றுவிட்டார்கள் என்று சொல்ல முடியாது. சில சமயங்களில் அவர்கள் கற்றதை மறந்துவிடுவார்கள். பின் மீண்டும் ஏற்கனவே கற்ற ஒன்றை மறுபடியும் அடிப்படையிலிருந்து கற்பிக்கவேண்டிய நிலை உண்டாகும். அப்போது பெற்றோர்களாகிய நாங்கள் மனந்தளராமல் மீண்டும் அனைத்து முயற்சிகளையும் தொடங்கவேண்டும். எதிர்காலம் நிச்சயமற்றது. ஆனால் எதுவாயினும் அவனது வளர்ச்சியை நோக்கிச் செயல்படுவதையே நாங்கள் விரும்புகிறோம். “

Embracing Challenges and Fostering Inclusivity

“At home, I am responsible for coaching my brother on topics such as Math and Science. Communication with him can be challenging at times due to his autism traits. Sometimes my emotions get the better of me, resulting in conflicts between us. Yet, as a sister, I wish that my brother could rely on me for advice and comfort.

I see my endeavor to understand him as a lifelong journey, hoping to provide him the space to share his thoughts without being judged. It is through him that my social norms are challenged, raising questions within me about how we should contribute to an inclusive society.”

Raymond Yap from NAFA texted me, asking if I could paint a portrait of a caregiver of an autistic dependent to raise awareness of her challenges and struggles. I immediately agreed because he was my teacher, and it was my first time painting for a cause. This experience was profoundly rewarding, allowing me to contribute to a meaningful cause and make a positive impact. It deepened my understanding of the caregiver's journey and the transformative power of art in raising awareness and fostering empathy.

Lessons Learned from My Son's Autism Journey

“When my son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2, our lives changed in ways I never imagined. Caring for him has been a profound journey, teaching me invaluable lessons that have reshaped my understanding of connection and communication. Before, I never realized how much could be said without words. My son’s nonverbal cues—his body language, gestures, and the emotions he expresses—have opened my eyes to a richer, deeper form of interaction.

Every day, I become more attuned to his unique way of experiencing the world, which has made me more patient, empathetic, and appreciative of the small victories that might go unnoticed by others. Watching him navigate his daily challenges with such resilience inspires me endlessly. This journey, while demanding, has been filled with moments of profound connection and joy, reminding me that love and understanding often speak louder than words ever could.”

Navigating Autism and the Future for Kirisnah

“I often wonder what the future holds for my grandson. What will happen to him when he eventually outlives us?

Kirisnah is my first grandson, and I adore him deeply. The knowledge of his autism diagnosis brought sadness to me. Since birth, I have been very much involved in his care alongside his parents.

Now, in my later years, my involvement is largely restricted due to my health issues. Looking back, witnessing his growth is the proudest moment of my life.

Still, his future troubles me greatly. His ability to deal with life's challenges is something that keeps me awake.”

A Mother's Resolve Amidst Autism and Personal Health Challenges

“My son is diagnosed with autism…

It’s a daily reminder to me. Whenever I think of the future, my biggest worry is how my son is going to manage his life without me and my husband. And it does not help that I have to manage my own health issues as well. It’s like a big shadow that looms on the horizon.

And yet, there is only so much I can worry about for the future. I tell myself that as long as my health prevails, I will continue to support my son for as long as possible. In time, I hope that he will become independent and live his desired life.”

A Caregiver's Reflections and Hopes

"Whenever I reflect on my role as a caregiver, it evokes a profound sense of sadness within me. In my fifties, I find myself contemplating my son’s future. The thoughts of who should care for my son weigh heavily on my mind. Without me and my wife, will my son be able to navigate the challenges imposed by life?

As a Hindu, it is customary for the male heir to perform his parents’ last rites. Yet, my son experiences sensory issues and may struggle to perform my last rites. The thought of it fills me with sadness. It is a reality that I must gradually come to terms with.

Uncertainties hover around my thoughts. Yet, I cling to hope that he will overcome his challenges, that my son will achieve independence eventually so that my wife and I need not worry for him until our deathbed."

When I was in art school, I had classmates who were autistic, which gave me insight into the daily challenges their parents face. So, when I received information from my abstract painting lecturer, Raymond Yap, about this project, I immediately committed. I wanted to offer my support to these families, drawing from my understanding and empathy gained from personal experiences.
